What is needed to swap a 4L60E to a 4L80E?


In almost every case, you will need to build (or buy) a new transmission crossmember, a new torque converter, a set of transmission lines, a modified or swap harness, and a modified driveshaft with a larger yoke and crossover U-joint.



Will a 4L60E transfer case fit a 4L80E?


Swap your 4L60E transmission to the much stronger 4L80E transmission with our 4L60E to 4L80E adapter (adapter only). You can use the computer you have now on 1998 up models with the use of our #10X wiring harness. The transfer case you have now can be used as is and will be moved 1 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches to the rear.



Are all 4L60E plugs the same?


There are two different ECU connectors for the 4L60E. The green connector is from 1999-2005, while 2006… Chevy transmission, Ls engine, 4l60e transmission rebuild.

The key distinction of the Later 4L60-E (1996-2010) from the Early 4L60-E (1992-1997), 4L60 (1990-1992), or 700R4 (1982-1989) is the six-bolt “hex” rear output or tailhousing / adapter pattern. The previous versions featured a four-bolt square bolt pattern at the adapter or tailhousing.

The 4l80e will bolt up to your existing flywheel using 3 bolts instead of 6. The jury is still out on this one as the 4l80 came with 6 but 350 and 400 only ever used 3. I ran 3 in my turbo truck setup without issues. FYI, there were TH400 converters that DID come with 6 bolts.

The 4L60E is very similar to the 4L60 in almost every way, including having a 4-gear automatic shift transmission. Also, both 4L60 and 4L60E feature gears positioned or placed longitudinally (in a north-south direction). However, the 4L60E can handle a GVWR of 8,600 lb, which is more than 4L60’s.



Does a 4L60E have a kickdown cable?


It looks very much like the 700R4 that it replaced, but don’t be fooled. They are so close that the 700R4 was also known as a 4L60 after just a few minor changes. The 4L60E has no kickdown or TV cable, and all of that work is done through solenoids that are run thanks to a VSS at the back of the transmission.



How much power can a 4L60E handle?

The 1-2 shift failure on the 4L60E is often due to a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS). Test the sensor (there should be a smooth, linear electrical response over the range of motion) or substitute a known good unit.

4L60E to 4L80E conversion flexplate. This Flexplate works on all 98 up LS based engines with the exception of the LQ4 6.0. The LQ4 LS engine can be identified by the dished pistons. This new flexplate would be used when taking the 4L60E out and replacing it with the 4L80E.

Re: Can any 4l60 work with a 5.3? Most 5.3’s came with a 4l60e behind them, so YES, they fit. Look for one from the “LS years” meaning 2000 which will have all the correct bell housing bolt holes. You need to find a 2wd tranny as well, otherwise the tail shaft will have to be swapped out to work.



Which is better 4L60 or 4L80?


Without a doubt the 4L80E is the more powerful of the two transmissions. Vehicles with powerful engines, such as big trucks for towing or high speed cars for racing, require a 4L80E rather than a 4L60E as the power of the engine is likely to break smaller, less powerful transmissions.

The two transmissions cannot be differentiated from the outside. The 4L65E shares the same exterior parts but have stronger internals such as 5 pinion planets compared to 4 in the 4L60E. 4L60E uses a 6.5″ depth bell with 6 bolts for non gen 3 LS applications and a 7″ depth bell with 7 bolts for LS applications.

Registered. Yeah, it will bolt up fine, but you won’t be able to make it shift. The 4L60E was electronically controlled and if you don’t have the controller it won’t work.
