Is Gandalf a Manwë?


Gandalf is Manwëva ar Vardava Maia: a Maia of Manwë and Varda. He bore Narya, the Ring of Fire.



What did Manwë look like?


Manwë dressed in blue robes and had blue eyes. He wielded a scepter of sapphire made for him by the Ñoldor. The Vanyar were his favorite Elves, and they lived with him and Varda on Mount Taniquetil.



What Manwë means?


Compared to real mythologies, Manwë represents possibly a sky father like Zeus/Jupiter of the Greco-Roman mythology. Like Zeus, Manwë is both a sky “deity” and a leader of his pantheon and is associated with the eagle.



Who fought Morgoth?


But after a time, Fingolfin grew weary, and Morgoth beat him to the ground three times. Fingolfin rose up and continued to fight each time, but as Mandos had foretold, no power of the Elves could defeat Morgoth, a Vala.



Where is Taniquetil?


Taniquetil, also known as Oiolossë and the Holy Mountain, was the highest peak in all of Arda’s history. It was located near the coast of Valinor.



Why is Gandalf called mithrandir?


Namely, in Sindarin, the phrase “Mithrandir” means “Grey Pilgrim” or “Wanderer”, which is actually a brilliant and very accurate description of Gandalf and one of his roles in the stories. The name is pronounced as [miˈθrandir], and it comes from the words mith (“grey”) and randir (“pilgrim, wandering man”).



Who is King Valar?


History. The Valar were the fourteen Ainur who, after being molded of Eru’s thought, entered Arda after its creation, to give order to the world and combat the new evils of Melkor.



Who took Frodo to Rivendell?


When the Nazgul approached again, Glorfindel put Frodo on his white horse Asfaloth, and bade the horse take Frodo to Rivendell. Asfaloth outran the black horses of the Nazgûl and managed to cross the Ford of Bruinen which led to Rivendell.



How old is Gandalf?


The closest approximation of Gandalf’s physical age is 24,000 years old, according to Gandalf himself. Yet, various dates of key events in other Tolkien texts show that Gandalf has actually only walked in his physical form for just over two thousand years.



Is Gandalf one of the Valar?


Valinor. In Valinor, Gandalf was called Olórin. He was one of the Maiar of Valinor, specifically, of the people of the Vala Manwë; and was said to be the wisest of the Maiar. He was also closely associated with two other Valar: Irmo, in whose gardens he lived, and Nienna, the patron of mercy, who gave him tutelage.



How was Arda created?


Arda was created within Eä by Eru Ilúvatar. It was then shaped by the Valar, with continental masses such as Middle-earth and Aman, and oceans, like Belegaer. Arda was the home of Elves, Men, Dwarves and other races as well as the kelvar and olvar.



How many Ainur are there?


After the creation of Arda, many of the Ainur descended into it to guide and order its growth; of these there were fifteen more powerful than the rest. Fourteen of these great Ainur became known as the Valar, or Powers of Arda.



Is Fingolfin still alive?


Fingolfin died there after a mighty duel, wounding Morgoth seven times with his sword Ringil, and struck one last punishing blow to Morgoth’s foot before he broke the High King.



Is Galadriel related to Fingolfin?


Galadriel was first cousin of Elrond’s great-grandfather (Turgon, King of Gondolin). Thus, they are first cousins thrice removed. Elrond was the great-great-grandson of Fingolfin, brother of Finarfin, Galadriel’s father. Thus, they are first cousins thrice removed through another line.



Who kills Morgoth?


After committing many evils across the First Age and preceding eras, such as the theft of the Silmarils, which resulted in his name Morgoth, and the destruction of the Two Lamps and the Two Trees of Valinor, Morgoth was defeated by the Host of Valinor in the War of Wrath.



How tall is Thangorodrim?


One drawing by Tolkien, if to scale, would have made Thangorodrim 35,000 ft high, and the statement that it lay 150 leagues (450 Númenórean miles) north of Menegroth puts it too far away for some of the action in The Silmarillion to make sense; a distance of 150-200 miles would have been more consistent.

Their halls are above the everlasting snow, upon Oiolossë, the uttermost tower of Taniquetil, tallest of all the mountains upon Earth.



Why does Faramir call Gandalf?


So Mithrandir is Sindarin for “Grey Pilgrim”, which is why the Elves know him by it, and both Men and Hobbits call him Gandalf, meaning “Elf of the staff”, and the Dwarves have another name for him.



Who are the 2 blue Wizards?


In the game their names are not said, but the description of the artifact implies the two wizards are Alatar and Pallando.

Sauron was a fallen Maia. His race was Ainur. There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought…



Is Melkor a Valar?


Morgoth Bauglir ([ˈmɔrɡɔθ ˈbau̯ɡlir]; originally Melkor [ˈmɛlkor]) is a character, one of the godlike Valar, from Tolkien’s legendarium. He is the main antagonist of The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, and The Fall of Gondolin.



Is Sauron a Valar?


Years of the Lamps. Long before the First Age, Sauron’s name was originally Mairon. He was the mightiest Maia of the Vala Aulë the Smith, and learned much from Aulë in the ways of smithying and handiwork, becoming a great craftsman, and “mighty in the lore of” Aulë’s people. He was among the most powerful Maiar.

Are there two Glorfindel’s?


Glorfindel died and was eventually reincarnated, essentially the same as Gandalf was (though, being a maia, Gandalf’s revival required the intervention of Eru, whereas the Valar did it themselves for Glorfindel). So it is the same Glorfindel in spirit, but not in body, however you wish to interpret that.



When was Glorfindel the first killed?


Gandalf picked Bilbo Baggins because he was adventurous. Bilbo’s thirst for adventure and excitement was very unusual for a hobbit, but that was just what Gandalf needed. Another factor is that Bilbo Baggins was the son of Belladonna Took, a famously inquisitive hobbit.



How old is Smaug?


Certainly dragons live very, very long– Glaurung had been ‘brooding’ for a century, and was still considered to be juvenile. Smaug was at very least ~180 years old by the time he was slain.



Is Gandalf a God?


Gandalf is, in an incredibly simplified version, a lesser God. He takes the form of a man in Middle Earth because that’s the role he is to assume there to be able to walk among mortals. Gandalf the Grey is one of five “wizards” sent to Middle Earth to combat evil, such as Sauron.



Is Galadriel a Valar?


The particular kingdom Galadriel and her husband Celeborn govern, Lothlórien or Lórien, is a realm of “Silvan” elves (the Nandor), who in the racial hierarchy of Tolkien’s mythology are considered lesser elves.

Originally, it was Melkor, “he who arises in might,” the most powerful of the Ainur (or angels). But Melkor became arrogant and saw himself as superior to the other angels, and rebelled against God. Like Satan in our own world, he fell from grace and became the spirit of evil, known as Morgoth (meaning “dark enemy”).



Is Maiar Ainur?


The Maiar (singular Maia; Quenya, pronounced [ˈmaɪ. ar]) were those spirits which descended to Arda to help the Valar shape the World. They were numerous, yet not many were named, and few also took visible shapes in Middle-Earth. The Maiar were Ainur — technically, any Ainu that is not counted as a Vala is a Maia.



Who is the most powerful elf in LOTR?


Eventually, Morgoth was bound in chains by the Valar and thrown into the Void, leaving the permanent damage his evils had done, and his former lieutenant Sauron, to trouble the world. One day, according to a prophecy, Morgoth will rise again in great wrath, but he will be destroyed in the Dagor Dagorath.



Was Finwë reincarnated?


After his death, Finwë dwelt for a time in the Halls of Mandos where he met Míriel, his first wife. Later, when the Valar agreed that Finwë should be brought back to life, he instead decided not to, thus giving Míriel a chance to be reincarnated.



What type of Elf is Legolas?


Legolas is a Sindarin Elf from the Woodland Realm of Northern Mirkwood. His father, Thranduil, is the King of the Silvan Elves living in that realm, making Legolas the Prince of Mirkwood.



Who is the oldest Elf in LOTR?


The oldest elf in the entire Tolkien Legendarium is Ingwë, the High King of the Vanyarin Elves, and the most ancient elf is Imin, one of the fathers of the Elves.
