The verdict is in. Hive is a great game. Easy to teach, a good amount of strategy, durable pieces, and it’s really fun to boot. Even your friends who hate bugs will love to play Hive!



How long does a game of Hive take?


Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board. The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.



What’s the difference between Hive and Hive pocket?


The key difference between Hive Pocket and Hive is size. The pieces for Hive Pocket are noticeably smaller, which makes the game a lot easier to carry along as well as significantly lighter.

Q: Can I voluntarily pass, or make a “no-op move” which does not change the piece arrangement? A: No. The rules clearly say “Players then take turns to either place or move any one of their pieces”. The only time you pass is when you must pass due to having no legal move.

Is Hive like chess?


While Hive has a distinct geometry and unique tactics, it echoes some concepts from chess. Pinning an enemy piece, by placing one of your own pieces to keep it from moving, is a key tactic. And the condition that ends the game—encircling the enemy queen bee so that it has no moves—is analogous to checkmate.



How do you play Duke?


In The Duke, players move their troops (tiles) around the board and flip them over after each move. Each tile’s side shows a different movement profile. If you end your movement in a square occupied by an opponent’s tile, you capture that tile. Capture your opponent’s Duke to win!

Hive: The Pillbug is a new pair of tiles that can be added to Hive. The pillbug can move one space at a time OR it can move an adjacent unstacked piece (friend or enemy) two spaces: up onto the Pillbug itself, then down into another empty space adjacent to itself.
